The Wearable Landscape – An Open-Science Initiative

The project Wearable Landscape is an open-science initiative aiming to highlight the important value of validation processes of wearables for the assessment of 24-hour physical behavior (i.e., sleep, sedentary behavior, and physical activity). This initiative is a non-funded project and is currently driven solely by the intrinsic motivation of the project team.

Researchers, customers, and developers will soon be able to use this platform as a source of information regarding validation studies and the validation process. In a first step, they can search for specific validation studies (in terms of devices, setting, target group, etc.) via an interactive dashboard (in development). In a further step, the website will evolve into a living review, ensuring ongoing updates through periodic literature searches. In the future, we envision the website becoming a central point for resource pooling for validation processes in wearables within the scientific community. This could involve building a network for planning upcoming validation studies, where researchers can upload protocols, and the community receives alerts, fostering collaborations in resource-sharing, equipment provision, conducting studies at various locations, and joint data analysis or pre-processing efforts.

In perspective, our project pursues the following visions:

  • Providing an up-to-date reference list for validation studies of wearables.
  • Establishing an interactive dashboard with a continuously growing database
  • Developing an interactive platform for cooperation and pooling of resources on the topic of wearables including a "member area" with various options (offers and requests, collaboration for projects).
  • Financing the project cost-neutral and focusing on sustainable development
